Dr. Ahna Brutlag, assistant director of veterinary services at Pet Poison Helpline, will be lecturing at this year’s American Animal Hopsital Association Annual Conference.

Here is a schedule of her lectures:

Sunday, March 18th 2012
9:00 – 9:50 am
One Pill Can Kill: Drugs of Significant Concern in Companion Animals

In general practice, it’s crucial to know which common drugs and substances are of the highest toxicological concern. This lecture will detail a number of common human and veterinary drugs and substances which, if administered to a cat or dog, may prove quickly fatal, even in very small amounts. Examples include acetaminophen, aspirin, common decongestants, skin cancer treatments (5-FU), diet or “energy” pills and flea/tick treatments. We will discuss the clinical presentations, therapeutic management, and useful diagnostics for these common killers.

Sunday, March 18th 2012
10:05 – 10:55 am
It’s Not Just Marijuana Anymore: A Review of Illicit Drugs

Did you know that “bath salts” aren’t just for bathing anymore? They’re the slang term for one of the newest designer drugs in the US. If you suspect exposure to an illicit substance in a pet, how can you test for it? Do human urine drugs screens work in dogs? Attend this lecture to learn about the clinical signs and treatments for animals exposed to new and emerging drugs such as Spice, K2 and “bath salts” as well as commonly abused prescription drugs such as amphetamines (ADD/ADHD medications) and opioids (including heroin). We will also review the more familiar agents such as marijuana and discuss the pros and cons of human urine drug tests in veterinary medicine.

Sunday, March 18th 2012
11:10 – 12:00 pm
Topical Toxin Titans… And How to Treat Them

Chewing into tubes of topical ointments is hard to resist if you’re a dog. This unique category of products contains everything from the highly toxic (and often fatal) 5-FU to the quite benign zinc oxide. Additionally, even products intended to be used on animals, such as tea tree oil and concentrated pyrethroids, can lead to severe toxicity. We will discuss the various toxidromes seen with exposures to these products.
