CAN A DOG DRINK COFFEE?

Coffee shop patios have become an increasingly popular way for people to socialize their dogs. But it’s important that owners remain aware of the potential effects coffee can have on a dog’s health. Get informed about how caffeinated products may negatively affect your pup and what you should do if they accidentally take a sip.

Dangers of Coffee to Dogs

With coffee being a beloved favorite of many around the world, it’s important to remember that our four-legged friends should steer clear. Caffeine can be detrimental to dogs with symptoms including tremors, seizures and even loss of muscle control in more severe cases. Smaller breeds are especially vulnerable – so if you ever catch your pup drinking a coffee, take action right away.

Treatment for Caffeine Poisoning

If your dog consumed coffee and is displaying the previously mentioned symptoms, it’s important to seek medical help right away. If your dog is experiencing different symptoms, still contact your veterinarian. Call Pet Poison Helpline® at (855) 764-7661 and your veterinarian for medical advice. Take your dog to the veterinary clinic so your veterinarian can examine your dog and administer the correct course of treatment. Your veterinarian may induce vomiting to flush out your dog’s system. Depending on the severity of the poisoning, they may also administer medications to stabilize the circulatory and central nervous systems. In some cases, your dog may require continuous supportive care, so they may need to stay at the hospital for monitoring.
