Are Macadamia Nuts Safe for Dogs to Eat?

It can be tempting to share snacks with our pups, especially when they are begging for a bite! Macadamia nuts are a healthy and delicious snack, and they make the perfect addition to a batch of cookies.  While you are baking you might be wondering, are macadamia nuts safe for dogs?  

 

Unfortunately, the answer is no.  Macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs if ingested. If you think your dog may have gotten their paws on some of these nuts, you should contact your veterinarian immediately and begin monitoring them for the clinical signs of macadamia nut toxicity  

 

 

What Makes Macadamia Nuts So Dangerous For Dogs? 

 

Frequently referred to as one of the most hazardous foods for dogs, the exact chemical or substance that causes this toxicity is not known.  

 

Even small doses of this tree nut can cause illness. In smaller dogs, it is predicted that even a tenth of an ounce can cause symptoms. 

 

My Dog Has Eaten Macadamia Nuts, What Do I Do Now? 

 

As with any health concern, your first step is to call your veterinarian. During this time, be sure to watch out for the clinical signs of macadamia nut poisoning in your pet. 

In the majority of cases, these symptoms include: 

 

  • The weakening of the rear legs 
  • Diarrhea 
  • Vomiting 
  • High body temperature 
  • Looking sluggish/ depressed 
  • Reduced appetite 
  • Shaking 

 

While many dogs experience only mild clinical symptoms such as stomach upset or diarrhea, in severe cases dogs may begin to tremble, experience weakness in the rear limbs, or have a fever.  

 

Treatment 

 

The first step to treating macadamia nut poisoning is to induce vomiting, activated charcoal may also be administered. In more serious cases, aggressive treatment may be needed. If your dog consumed macadamia nuts in a baked good, bring the ingredient list or recipe with you- as many artificial sweeteners and common mix-ins such as raisins or xylitol can also be poisonous if ingested.
