Macadamia Nuts: A Dangerous Delight

Macadamia nuts are native to Australia but are now grown in many other places in the world. While popular amongst humans for several reasons, they are not safe for dogs to eat. Macadamia nuts contain a toxin that affects nerve and muscle function. The specific toxic mechanism is still unknown. Depending on the amount ingested, severe clinical signs may be seen. Some dogs can develop pancreatis due to the high oil content found in these nuts.

Toxicity to Dogs

Your pup can develop severe clinical signs from consuming macadamia nuts. As little as 2 grams of macadamia nuts per 2 pounds of your dog’s body weight can induce signs of poisoning. Potential signs of poisoning include:

  • Lethargy
  • Increased body temperature
  • Vomiting
  • Tremors
  • Joint stiffness
  • Inability to walk

Treatment

If you suspect that your pup has been poisoned by macadamia nuts, you must call your veterinarian and Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 for medical assistance.  Take your pup to the veterinary clinic so they can receive treatment. Your veterinarian may induce vomiting to decontaminate and administer activated charcoal to bind the toxins. Specific treatment will depend on your dog’s symptoms, dosage, and when the ingestion occurred. It’s hard to watch your furry friend suffering, but seeking treatment right away will give them the best chances of recovery.
