NIC POISONING IN PETS

There are dozens of nicotine containing products that can be found almost anywhere. Your dog can come across nicotine products while on a nice walk in the park. If your pet ingests nicotine, they can experience poisoning.  Nicotine containing products include cigars, cigarettes, vapes, nicotine gum, chewing tobacco, etc. Symptoms can appear within just an hour of ingestion. To ensure your pet’s safety, you must be aware of the dangers of nicotine and to take any necessary precautions to avoid poisoning.

Nic Poisoning Treatment

Nicotine poisoning can be a life-threatening emergency, so it is up to you to act quickly if you suspect your pet has ingested nicotine. Seek immediate medical attention by contacting your veterinarian and Pet Poison Helpline® at (855) 764-7661. Antacids are not recommended for treatment, because the acid in the stomach slows down the absorption of nicotine naturally. Your veterinarian may induce vomiting, administer activated charcoal, and administer IV fluids to aid excretion and stabilization. Medications may be required to slow the heart rate, decrease blood pressure, and/or stop tremors. With the right medical attention, your pet should be able to make a full recovery. Although it may be difficult to completely rid the environment of nicotine, it is important to monitor your pet’s environment to ensure they do not ingest any products containing nicotine.
