The alkaloids found in poppy plants differ between species with some being more harmful than others. Ingestion of any part of the plant can result in gastrointestinal upset and central nervous system effects. Clinical signs of toxicosis include: inappetence, sedation, ataxia, and coma for very large ingestions.
