Common signs to watch for:
- Pawing at face
- Swelling of the lips, tongue, airway
- Difficulty swallowing
These plants contain insoluble crystals of calcium oxalate. Chewing or biting into plant material releases the crystals which penetrate tissue resulting in injury. Immediate signs of oral exposure are pawing at face, drooling, and vomiting. Possible swelling of the lips, tongue, and oral cavity could make breathing and swallowing difficult.
