Toxicity to pets

Decongestants reduce nasal stuffiness by constricting the blood vessels in the nose, but with an overdose, decongestants cause severe constriction of major blood vessels resulting in dangerous high blood pressure and stroke. Pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine are decongestants and may be sold as the only ingredient or in combination w/ cold, flu, or allergy medications; the letter (- D) following an allergy medication indicates a decongestant co-ingredient. Signs of decongestant poisoning in companion animals includes vomiting and neurologic abnormalities.
