MY DOG ATE CHOCOLATE. WILL HE DIE?

When it comes to the combination of dogs and chocolate, it is important to be aware of the potential risks. Eating chocolate can be dangerous for dogs, as it may lead to poisoning and potentially death. The severity of the symptoms will depend on the size of the dog, dosage, and type of chocolate that has been consumed. Even small amounts of chocolate can be dangerous, so it’s important to keep it away from pets. Chocolate wrappers can pose a choking risk as well. It is important to educate family and friends about the dangers of chocolate consumption for dogs. With the right knowledge and precautions, you can help ensure the safety of your furry friend.

Clinical Signs of Chocolate Poisoning

Chocolate can be dangerous for dogs, as it contains the chemicals theobromine and caffeine. Humans can consume chocolate without issue because our bodies are able to metabolize the chemicals quickly. Dogs, however, cannot metabolize these substances as quickly, leading to a buildup of the chemicals in their system which can cause adverse effects. If a dog ingests chocolate, they may display the following clinical signs:

  • Tremors in the muscles and limbs
  • Seizures
  • Irregular heartbeats
  • Agitation/restlessness
  • Increased heart rate
