Dangers with Hangover Pills

Happy New Years Day! You’ve heard about the dangers of alcohol, but are there any dangers with some of the popular brands of “hangover pills?”

Active ingredients include; Vitamin C, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, L-Glutamic Acid HCL, Succinic Acid, Fumaric Acid, L-Cysteine, Alpha Lipoic Acid. Other ingredients include; Croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, modified cellulose, food glaze, titanium dioxide, water glucose (as dextrose monohydrate).

Danger: Alpha lipoic acid (ALA):  ALA is being used with increasing frequency in many OTC (over the counter) products. ALA can cause significant toxicosis in our pets which can be fatal. Clinical signs typically develop within 30 minutes to several hours post ingestion and can include; vomiting, hypersalivation, anorexia, hypoglycemia, weakness, ataxia, tremors, seizures, weakness, hyperirritability, possible increase in liver enzymes, liver necrosis, increase in kidney values and death. If you suspect that your pet ingested a product containing ALA, please call a veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline® immediately.

Product: Chaser – Freedom from Hangovers.

Active ingredients include; Activated Calcium Carbonate 650 Mg, Vegetable Carbon 350 Mg. Other ingredients include; Whey, Microcrystalline, Cellulose, Silicon Dioxide, Croscarmellose Sodium, Stearic Acid, Carnauba Wax, Magnesium Stearate.

Danger: Gastrointestinal upset and risk for FBO (foreign body obstruction) with a larger number of these pills ingested.

Active ingredients include; Prickly Pear Extract, N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine, Milk Thistle, B-Vitamins (B1 – thiamine, B6 and B12), Vitamin C and Electrolyte blend (calcium, magnesium, sodium chloride, potassium and manganese). Other ingredients include; Cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, rice flour, magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide.
